Students at Patuxent get a full hour for lunch!

Over the weekend, the Washington Post featured an article about a school that gives students a full 60 minutes for lunch time. And it got me to thinking. Should TMA consider some variation of an extended lunch? The image of the girl above was taken during her lunch period!  And it's not all study sessions:
"Students lounge in hallways and classrooms with sack lunches and trays of food. They play Frisbee, get dating advice from teachers, hold club meetings, cram for afternoon quizzes, play video games or catch up on sleep."
How exciting to think about an entire school spending the middle of the day engaged in clubs, homework, and relaxation.

But of course, it's not that easy. Our lunch periods are carefully crafted so that all 385 students have a chance to eat in the cafeteria. The academic rigor at our school demands that every minute of available class time be used effectively. And major changes like this rarely happen without significant support.

If you have a minute, read the article and let us know what you think. Should we have one huge lunch period? Students - if we had an hour for lunch, how would you use it? Would you be willing to extend the school day in order to have a longer lunch?

  1. I think that having a longer lunch hour is a great idea because many students eat very slowly and do not get to finish their lunches in the 35 minutes given. Also, once students get to their lockers, to the cafe, in line for food and are seated with their lunches, they really only have 20 minutes to eat and socialize. I think that even a 10 minute extension of lunch would do wonders.

  2. i do not think extending the school lunch time is a good idea if we have to extend the school day. 3:30 has already been proven too long.

  3. I think that its a good idea to extended lunch because it seem to be that we don't have a enough time to eat and enjoy the time we have out of class.

  4. I think having a longer lunch period, would be okay. I think it will give me a chance to get a lot of stuff done. Sometimes I just need to relax and lay back and think about things. The time that we do have for lunch. Is not long engough.

  5. For the comment about 3:30 having been "proven too long" I'd like to hear more about that. I think there is evidence indicating that 7:30 is too early, but I haven't seen anything about 3:30 being too late.

  6. Everyone Needs a longer lunch period. In my school, we only get 25 minutes to eat. There is a Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday section. If you sit in Friday section and its Mondays turn, we only get about 5-8 minutes to eat. Its not healthy if you eat fast because if you do, your brain doesnt know when your full so it tells your body to keep eating. That way, you will get fat eventually. Do you want that to happen? No, so make lunch peroids longer! GOOD IDEA

  7. And you dont have to extend the time, just make the class periods a few minutes shorter. Sometimes if you dont have enough time to eat, when the bell rings, your still eating so your late to your next class. If that happens, you will soon get a detention? Want that to go on your school records? NOOOO!!!!
